Creditors’ Legal Clinic (For Cases in Bankruptcy Court)

The Creditors’ Legal Clinic provides free legal advice and information about the bankruptcy process to low-income individuals who are owed money by people or companies that have filed for bankruptcy in one of the bankruptcy courts located in New York City.  The Creditors’ Legal Clinic does not provide advice or assistance to businesses, debtors, employers or landlords.  For more information, click here.

There are three ways for creditors to start the Clinic intake process and obtain assistance:

  1. Online Form Submission. Go here and fill out an online form with basic information.  We will contact you after receiving your form.
  2. Email. Email us at [email protected] to request an appointment.
  3. Phone. Call us at (646) 602-5621 and leave a message.

Other Individuals Seeking Legal Assistance:

Due to limited capacity, the Creditor Justice Project currently only accepts clients who are represented by a non-profit legal services organization in a matter that has already resulted, or may result, in the individual winning a final monetary judgment. Individuals in those categories should ask the organization that currently represents them whether the organization would like to request assistance from the Creditor Justice Project.

Individuals who have won a judgment and are seeking legal assistance to enforce their judgment also may be able to obtain a referral to an attorney through one of the local bar associations:

  • New York City Bar Legal Referral Service: 212-626-7373
  • Queens County Bar Association Lawyer Referral Service: 718-291-4500
  • Brooklyn Bar Association Lawyer Referral Service: 718- 624-0843
  • Bronx County Bar Association: [email protected]

Legal Services Providers Seeking Assistance:

The Creditor Justice Project collaborates with NYC-based non-profit legal services providers on legal and investigative strategies to help their clients turn their judgments into actual dollars. This assistance is available pre-litigation, during litigation and upon judgment. Non-profit legal services providers can contact CJP to inquire about potential collaboration by email at [email protected].
